I have learned over the years that the true value of a clock is not measured in financial cost to buy or replace, but in the irreplaceable memories they hold in their hands.
I have been a clockmaker for nearly 20 years but have loved all things mechanical throughout my life. As a little boy I collected steam engines and loved making models and any craft using my hands. I have always enjoyed understanding how things work together, from huge bridge constructions to delicate, fine jewellery. I love cars and was a mechanic for 12 years before realising the benefits of a warm, clean workshop over a cold, dirty garage.
I have worked on just about every kind of clock from tiny verge movements to large turret clocks 60 feet up. After years of working for a well-renowned local clock shop, I decided to take the plunge and start my own business. I have been delighted to receive good feedback from my customers for restoring their precious timepieces to perfect working order. Each clock is individually assessed and considered as different types of clock require varying levels of sympathetic restoration. I don't believe a beautiful antique clock with signs of a long and eventful life should be restored so that it looks like a cheap reproduction. Patina, aging and fading add to the history and authenticity of genuine antiques and these qualities should be admired rather than polished away. The inner mechanicals of old clocks do suffer from wear and inexperienced handling and I love to give them back their 'voice' so that my customers can hear their chimes again. Some clocks I have worked on have been in the family for generations and my customers want their grandchildren to enjoy their beautiful sounds as they once did. Others have bought or inherited clocks and never heard them working properly.
I am happy to respond to any queries and will always give free advice. I stand by any quote I make and guarantee that work for 12 months. Having said that, a clock should only require a service every 5 years if overhauled properly by an experienced horologist.
On Sunday 25th October at 2am clocks go back by 1 hour. British Summer Time was first introduced as part of the Summer Time Act in 1916 so that people could save energy and spend more time outdoors during the day.
